The Rancho Santa Fe journal
Dispatches from the village and the hills: walks, rides, seasonal notes, and small observations from Rancho Santa Fe, California.

A magazine that only explained things would be a manual. The journal is where Rancho Santa Fe Living keeps its field notes: walks through the village at opening time, the smell of eucalyptus after the first rain, the way the light changes on the ridge in October, the small ceremonies of a place that runs on horse trailers and garden crews.
Entries are occasional and unhurried. Some will be close observations of a single morning; others will follow a question home, the way our piece on village mornings does. When a season turns, the journal turns with it: wildflowers on the south facing slopes in spring, the dry gold of August, the low brown light of December.
The journal is also our promise that this site keeps living. New entries appear on the front page feed with the rest of our coverage, and the seasons guarantee raw material. Pull up a chair on the arcade and read along.
Readers sometimes ask what qualifies as a journal entry here, and the honest answer is: attention. A village morning, the behavior of the marine layer in June, the winter light across the civic center lawn, a trail after the first rain; each becomes an entry when it is watched properly and written exactly. The discipline is older than this website, and the place supplies it generously. Correspondence improves it: readers who send a better observation, a season we missed, or a correction receive our thanks and, with permission, a mention.
